MANTICORE! RUN!!! by sonialeong
MANTICORE! RUN!!!
Well this one took a while XD Silas mucks up a spell and they end up getting chased by a manticore.

This is the opening scene from the second arc of 'A Brush With Magic', my fantasy light novel which I am fully illustrating. It's SOOO CLOSE TO BEING COMPLETED!!! I hope to have it out in time for London MCM  Comic Con this May, otherwise it will be done by this summer. Be sure to head to my tumblr tagged #brushmagic to see all the recent posts about it in one place! sonia-leong.tumblr.com/tagged/…

Pencilled and inked by hand, screen tone added digitally.

Are you ready to play now?
I drew this a while ago but only got around to screen toning it last week. Rua's just decapitated a bandit and is now goading the rest of them into having a go.

This is from my soon-to-be published, fully illustrated, fantasy light novel 'A Brush With Magic'. I post about it in various places, but if you want to see all the stuff about it in one easy place, try my Tumblr, tagged 'brushmagic' sonia-leong.tumblr.com/tagged/…

Your voice in my ear - Rua and Silas
Toning this page took a while, 2 hours of work on top of all the pencils and inks XD But it is a lovely page. I can't find the original drawing in my pile of papers, hope I didn't leave it in Shanghai! Silas checks on Rua's wounds and she is startled by how close his voice is to her ear so she turns and...! From 'A Brush With Magic'.

Behind my back - Rua from A Brush With Magic
I just really felt like drawing her bare back, showing off the bone/muscle in her arms a little. And it didn't feel right until I put twin bloodied blades in her hands.

Rua, the Vulpine warrior from A Brush With Magic.

This was a quick digital ink drawing done in PaintTool SAI in one layer in about 20 mins. And I am leaving it like that because it has a kind of wood block print feel which I like :)

Hi Sonia. It's a real honor to meet you here on DA! I was recently reading a book that you published called "The complete guide to drawing manga" Great guide book. And congratulations on all of your achievements. I was really excited to have read about all the great productions you've done as a professional artist and find this to be very encouraging and inspirational. I'm currently striving and have been at the wood works at a snails pace for years, but meeting many wonderful and talented artist here from all over the world on Deviant Art has greatly helped in maintaining staying power. Without you great artist, I probably would have given up as an artist a long time ago. But here I am, pushing forward as strong as ever. I know I have a long ways to go, but I feel confident enough that I'll get there eventually. Till then, I'm practicing whenever I can. ^^

I have this cool gift for interpretation that I discovered back when I first joined DA in mid commentary. I can read art like a driver can read a stop sign. XD It's allot of fun and I have been sharing feedback to fellow artist ever since. Sharing interpretations enables me to reach out and connect with fellow artist on a deeper level. I not only learn from the artist's unique inner worlds, but I also learn much about myself in the way that I react to the media of art work. It's a really cool experience for me. I'd be happy to share an interpretation of one of your works. :)

Aw, thank you so much for being so kind. I think that art and interpretation go hand in hand, and a good character design should really have many message within, whether it's colours or the practicality of the outfit suiting that character.

How much does it cost to produce per manga/comic page?

Yes. But for a whole book, I may change my page rate to reflect circumstances such as high royalties.

How much are we talking here?

e.g. 200 pg book, I may discount my rate by about 10-50% or so if I'm paid upfront an advance on royalties of a few thousand £. But like I said, it changes a lot depending on the size and scale of the project, who I am working with, every one is different!

Is this helpful for you? Are you trying to figure out how much to charge someone? Or are you trying to hire me? You are being a bit abrupt.

I normally charge anywhere from £50 to £300 depending on the style, finish, deadline and number of pages :)
